French Beans Foogath

Variation of the famous South Indian ‘ Beans foogath’, I’ve added chana dal to the dish which adds to its existing flavours.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes. Cooking Time: 12 minutes. Serves:4.

2 cups stringed and diagonally cut French beans
1½ tsp oil
½ tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
1 tsp soaked urad dal (split black lentils)
2 tbsp soaked chana dal (split Bengal gram)
4 to 6 curry leaves (kadi patta)
¼ tsp asafoetida (hing)
2 slit green chillies
Salt to taste
¼ cup grated coconut
2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)

1. Heat the oil and add the mustard seeds.
2. When the seeds crackle, add the urad dal and chana dal , curry leaves, asafoetida and green chillies and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds
3. Add the French beans, salt and 2 tbsp of water, mix well and cover and cook on a slow flame for 10 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
4. Add the coconut and coriander, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
Serve hot.
