Recipe Description

The Panuozzo Sandwich is a traditional Italian delight from the Campania region. Made with pizza dough, it’s baked until crispy, then stuffed with fresh mozzarella, savory prosciutto, and seasonal vegetables. Perfect for a casual lunch or dinner, this sandwich combines rustic flavors with a gourmet touch.

Ingredients

  • 250g pizza dough
  • 150g fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • 100g prosciutto
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • Handful of fresh basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 220°C (430°F). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
  2. Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza dough into an oval shape about 1cm thick.
  3. Bake the base: Place the dough on a baking tray or pizza stone and bake for 10 minutes until puffed and slightly golden.
  4. Prepare the filling: While the dough is baking, slice the mozzarella, tomato, and prepare the prosciutto and basil.
  5. Assemble the sandwich: Remove the baked dough from the oven and carefully slice it horizontally to create a pocket. Layer the mozzarella, prosciutto, tomato slices, and basil inside.
  6. Finish baking: Drizzle with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and return to the oven for 5 minutes until the cheese melts.
  7. Serve: Slice the sandwich into portions and serve warm.
