Popular khichdi recipe from the Gujarati cuisine made by combining broken wheat and split green gram.
FADA NI KHICHDI
Ingredients
½ cup broken wheat (fada/dalia), soaked for 15 minutes
¼ cup split green gram skinless, soaked for 15 minutes
3 tbsps ghee
1-inch cinnamon
2 cloves
1 tsp cumin seeds
¼ tsp asafoetida
Salt to taste
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp ginger-green chilli paste
2 medium onions, chopped
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 ½ tsps pav bhaji masala
½ cup shelled green peas, blanched
2 tbsps chopped fresh coriander
Method
1. Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a pressure cooker. Add the cinnamon, cloves, cumin seeds and asafoetida. Sauté for thirty seconds.
2. Add the split green gram, broken wheat, salt to taste and turmeric powder. Add four cups of water and close the lid and cook till pressure is released 3-4 times.
3. Open the lid when the pressure is reduced completely.
4. Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a deep non-stick pan. Add the ginger-green chilli paste and sauté for a minute.
5. Add the onions and sauté till translucent. Add the tomatoes and cook for four to five minutes.
6. Add pav bhaji masala and green peas and cook till the oil separates from the masala.
7. Add the boiled khichdi and water as required and cook for 2—3 minutes. Add fresh coriander and mix.
8. Transfer into a serving bowl. Garnish with remaining ghee and serve hot.
