José Andrés is a Spanish-American chef, restaurateur, and philanthropist who is widely recognized for his contributions to the culinary world and his efforts in humanitarian relief. He was born on July 13, 1969, in Mieres, Asturias, Spain.

Andrés’ love for cooking began at a young age when he started helping out in his parents’ kitchen. He enrolled at a culinary school in Barcelona at the age of 15 and worked at several restaurants before moving to the United States in 1991. He started working at various restaurants in New York City and eventually moved to Washington D.C.

In 1993, Andrés opened his first restaurant, Jaleo, which focused on traditional Spanish tapas. He later opened several other successful restaurants in Washington D.C. and other cities, including Zaytinya, Oyamel, and minibar by José Andrés.

Andrés has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Chef Award in 2011 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He has also been awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama in 2015 for his humanitarian work in providing disaster relief through his non-profit organization, World Central Kitchen.

In 2010, Andrés founded World Central Kitchen (WCK), a non-profit organization that uses food to empower communities and provide disaster relief in times of crisis. WCK has provided meals to people affected by natural disasters, such as Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, as well as other crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Andrés is also an author and has written several books, including “Tapas: A Taste of Spain in America” and “We Fed an Island: The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico, One Meal at a Time”.

Overall, José Andrés is a culinary icon who has not only contributed to the food industry but has also used his talents and resources to make a positive impact on the world.
