  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons boiling water

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and line a loaf pan or round cake pan with parchment paper.

Step 2: Mix the Batter

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Step 3: Prepare the Chocolate Mixture

  1. In a small bowl, mix the cocoa powder with the boiling water until smooth.
  2. Transfer 1/3 of the cake batter into the cocoa mixture and stir until well combined.

Step 4: Create the Marble Effect

  1. Pour half of the plain batter into the prepared pan.
  2. Spoon the chocolate batter on top in small dollops, then pour the remaining plain batter over the top.
  3. Use a skewer or knife to gently swirl the batters together, creating a marble effect.

Step 5: Bake and Cool

  1. Bake the cake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  2. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
