Early Life and Education
Sherson Lian was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 3rd March 1978. He grew up in a family that was passionate about food, and his mother was an excellent cook. As a child, Sherson was always interested in cooking and often helped his mother in the kitchen. He was fascinated by the different spices and flavors used in Malaysian cuisine and enjoyed experimenting with new recipes.
After completing his high school education, Sherson pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of East London in the United Kingdom. However, his passion for cooking never waned, and he continued to cook in his spare time.
Career in the Culinary World
In 2000, after completing his degree, Sherson returned to Malaysia and began his culinary career as an apprentice in the kitchens of several well-known restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. He trained under some of the most accomplished chefs in the country and gained valuable experience in different types of cuisines.
After completing his apprenticeship, Sherson worked as a chef at various restaurants and hotels in Malaysia, including the Hilton Kuala Lumpur and the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur. He quickly gained a reputation for his expertise in Asian cuisine and became known for his unique fusion of traditional Malaysian flavors with modern cooking techniques.
In 2007, Sherson opened his own restaurant, simply called “Sherson’s,” in the Bangsar neighborhood of Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant became a popular destination for food lovers, and Sherson’s reputation as a talented chef continued to grow.
Television Career
In 2011, Sherson was invited to participate in the Malaysian version of the reality cooking show “MasterChef.” He quickly became a fan favorite with his engaging personality and innovative recipes, and he finished the competition as the runner-up.
The exposure from “MasterChef” led to more television opportunities for Sherson. In 2013, he hosted his own cooking show on Asian Food Channel called “5 Rencah 5 Rasa,” which translates to “5 Spices 5 Tastes.” The show was a huge success and ran for three seasons, with Sherson traveling around Malaysia and Southeast Asia to discover new ingredients and cooking techniques.
In 2017, Sherson co-hosted a cooking competition show on Astro Malaysia called “Home Cooked Malaysia,” which aimed to discover the best amateur cooks in the country. The show was a hit, and Sherson’s expertise and charisma made him a household name.

In addition to his successful culinary and television careers, Sherson has also established himself as a savvy entrepreneur. In 2015, he founded the F&B consulting firm “Fat Spoon Consultancy,” which provides services such as menu development, branding, and kitchen design to restaurants and food businesses.
In 2018, Sherson opened his second restaurant, “Babe,” in Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant is known for its innovative and playful approach to cuisine, with dishes such as “Sashimi on Fire” and “Roasted Wagyu Beef Cheek.” Babe has been critically acclaimed and has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Best Restaurant award at the Malaysia Tatler Dining Awards in 2020.
