At Kopitiam, you can try traditional Malaysian dishes, and experience traditional Malaysian coffee shop culture. Kopitiam is co-owned and operated by Chef Kyo Pang, a Malaysian refugee who has taken asylum in the United States, as it is illegal to be queer in her home country. A majority of the trinkets in Kopitiam, as well as some ingredients, are from Malaysia, purchased by her family and shipped to NYC. Insider stopped by Kopitiam to taste Kyo’s take on generational family recipes, and try Malaysia’s national dish – spicy and savory Nasi Lemak.
