Early Life and Education

Chef Wan was born on November 17, 1958, in Singapore, to a family of seven siblings. His father was a Malay aristocrat and his mother was a Chinese Peranakan. He spent most of his childhood in the town of Balik Pulau in Penang, Malaysia, where he developed a love for cooking from his mother and grandmother.

Chef Wan attended St. Xavier’s Institution in Penang and later studied hotel management at the Food and Beverage Training Center in Singapore. He then went to Switzerland to pursue a degree in hotel management and worked at several prestigious hotels in Europe, including the Dorchester in London.

Career

After returning to Malaysia in the late 1980s, Chef Wan opened his first restaurant, Cafe Cafe, in Kuala Lumpur, which quickly gained a reputation for its innovative Malaysian cuisine. He later opened several more restaurants in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, including the popular “Chef Wan’s Kitchen” chain.

In addition to his restaurant ventures, Chef Wan has also been a prolific television personality. He has hosted several cooking shows on Malaysian television, including “Chef Wan to the Rescue,” “Citarasa Chef Wan,” and “Chef Wan’s Kitchen.” He has also appeared as a judge on several cooking competition shows, including “MasterChef Malaysia.”
