A traditional maharastrian dish, is packed with spices and entices us along with its aromatic smell and delish taste.
USSAL
Ingredients
1 cup dried white peas, soaked and cooked
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
12-16 curry leaves
2-3 green chillies, finely chopped
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
½ inch ginger, chopped
2 medium onions, finely chopped
1 medium tomato, finely chopped
Salt to taste
¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
1½ teaspoons goda masala
½ cup scraped fresh coconut
1 teaspoon grated jaggery
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh coriander leaves + for garnishing
Method
1. Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, green chillies, garlic and ginger, mix and sauté till fragrant.
2. Add onions and tomatoes, mix and sauté for 2-3 minutes. Add salt, turmeric powder and goda masala, mix well and cook till the oil separates.
3. Add white peas and mix well. Add ¾ cup water and stir to mix.
4. Add coconut, mix and bring to a boil. Add jaggery and coriander leaves, mix well and simmer for 1-2 minutes.
5. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with pavs, chopped onions and lemon wedges.
