Salim Al Kalbani is a renowned Omani chef who has brought international recognition to Omani cuisine. He has been featured in various food publications, appeared on numerous cooking shows, and has won several awards for his culinary skills.

Early Life and Education

Salim Al Kalbani was born in Oman in 1978. He grew up in a family of food enthusiasts who enjoyed cooking traditional Omani dishes. Al Kalbani’s mother was an excellent cook who instilled in him a passion for cooking from a young age.

After completing his schooling in Oman, Al Kalbani moved to the United Kingdom to study at the Westminster College in London, where he studied professional cooking. While in London, Al Kalbani worked in several restaurants to gain practical experience in the culinary arts.

Career

After completing his studies, Al Kalbani returned to Oman and began working as a chef in the country’s hospitality industry. He started his career at the Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz Carlton hotel in Muscat, where he worked as a commis chef. Al Kalbani’s talent and hard work were quickly recognized, and he was promoted to the position of Chef de Partie.

In 2004, Al Kalbani was appointed as the Head Chef at the Al Waha restaurant at the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa in Muscat. This was a turning point in his career, as he was given the opportunity to showcase his culinary skills to an international audience. Al Kalbani introduced new and innovative dishes to the menu, which were well-received by both local and international diners.

In 2010, Al Kalbani was invited to participate in the prestigious San Pellegrino Cooking Cup in Venice, Italy. This was a major achievement for Al Kalbani, as he was the first Omani chef to be invited to participate in the competition. Al Kalbani’s dish, a seared Omani lobster with curry and tomato chutney, was awarded third place by the panel of judges.

Following his success at the San Pellegrino Cooking Cup, Al Kalbani’s profile as a chef grew significantly. He was invited to participate in several other international culinary competitions, including the Bocuse d’Or in France and the World Gourmet Summit in Singapore.

In 2014, Al Kalbani was appointed as the Executive Chef at the Chedi Muscat, one of Oman’s most luxurious hotels. As the head of the hotel’s culinary team, Al Kalbani was responsible for overseeing the food and beverage operations at the hotel’s six restaurants. He introduced new menus and dishes to the hotel’s dining venues, which received critical acclaim from food critics and guests.

Al Kalbani’s culinary achievements have earned him numerous awards and accolades. He was named as one of the top 10 chefs in the Middle East by The Wall Street Journal in 2012, and was awarded the prestigious Medal of Honor by the Omani government in recognition of his contributions to the country’s culinary scene.

In addition to his work as a chef, Al Kalbani is also a culinary consultant and has worked with several international companies to develop recipes and menus. He has also appeared on numerous cooking shows and has hosted his own TV show, “Khallas,” which aired on Oman TV.
