Juan Manuel Barrientos is a Colombian chef, entrepreneur, and television personality. He is the founder and owner of El Cielo restaurants, which has locations in Colombia and the United States. Barrientos is known for his innovative cooking style that combines traditional Colombian flavors with modern techniques.

Early Life and Education

Juan Manuel Barrientos was born in Medellin, Colombia in 1983. He grew up in a family that had a passion for food, and his mother was an excellent cook. From a young age, Barrientos was fascinated by the flavors, textures, and aromas of food. He spent many hours watching his mother in the kitchen, learning about the different ingredients and techniques that went into creating delicious meals.

At the age of 14, Barrientos enrolled in a culinary program at a local vocational school. He quickly excelled in his studies and became determined to pursue a career in the culinary arts. After graduating from high school, he moved to Bogota to attend the Escuela de Artes Culinarias y Servicios de Hospitalidad de la Universidad de la Sabana.

During his time at the culinary school, Barrientos had the opportunity to work with some of the top chefs in Colombia. He also traveled to Europe and Asia to learn about different cuisines and cooking techniques. These experiences helped to shape his culinary style and gave him a broader perspective on food and cooking.

Career

After graduating from culinary school, Barrientos returned to Medellin and began working in some of the city’s top restaurants. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative chef, known for his use of fresh, local ingredients and his creative dishes.

In 2007, Barrientos opened his first restaurant, El Cielo, in the El Poblado neighborhood of Medellin. The restaurant quickly became a popular destination for food lovers, and Barrientos’ innovative cooking style and use of local ingredients helped to put Medellin on the culinary map.

Over the next few years, Barrientos continued to grow and expand his restaurant empire. He opened several more El Cielo locations in Colombia, including in Bogota and Cartagena. He also began to gain international recognition, participating in culinary events and competitions around the world.

In 2013, Barrientos opened his first El Cielo location in the United States, in Miami, Florida. The restaurant was an instant success, and Barrientos quickly gained a following among food critics and celebrities alike. He also began to appear on television, including on shows like Top Chef and Iron Chef America.

Today, Barrientos is one of the most successful and influential chefs in Colombia and the United States. He continues to innovate and experiment with new flavors and techniques, and his restaurants are known for their creative dishes and stunning presentation.

Culinary Style

Barrientos’ culinary style is a blend of traditional Colombian flavors and modern cooking techniques. He is known for his use of fresh, local ingredients, including fruits, vegetables, and herbs. He also incorporates ingredients that are native to Colombia, such as yuca, chontaduro, and guanabana.
