My nieces had sponge cake for their 1st birthday (twins). Here in Italy, they spray the cake with a mix of sugar water, which sounds gross but it’s delicious …adults usually have cake with liquors (of choice) sprayed on it, then the mascarpone in the layers and frosted with a heavy whipped cream. Heaven.
