A traditional dish – chicken cooked with lentils and flavourful masalas.
CHICKEN DALCHA
Ingredients
250 gms chicken, cut into small pieces on bone
½ cup split Bengal gram (chana dal), soaked for 1 hour
½ cup split red lentils (masoor dal), soaked for 1 hour
1 medium onion
3 tbsps ghee
2-3 dried red chillies
4-5 garlic cloves
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
½ tsp fenugreek seeds (methi dana)
12-15 curry leaves
4-5 cloves
2-3 green cardamoms
1 inch cinnamon
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
Salt to taste
2 tbsps melon seed paste
Fresh red chilli for garnishing
Method
1. Slice onion. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Roughly chop dried red chillies and garlic cloves.
2. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves to the pressure cooker and let them splutter. Add dried chillies, garlic and onion and sauté till onion becomes translucent.
3. Add chicken pieces and mix well. Add cloves, green cardamoms, cinnamon and turmeric powder and mix well.
4. Add spilt Bengal gram and split red lentils and mix well. Add red chilli powder and salt and mix well. Add 2 cups water and melon seed paste and mix again.
5. Close the cooker with the lid and cook under pressure till 2-3 whistles. Reduce the heat and continue to cook for 10 minutes.
6. Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with fresh chilli and serve hot.
