At the age of 14, Laprise got his first job working in a restaurant. He started out washing dishes and doing odd jobs, but he quickly became fascinated with the art of cooking. He began experimenting with different ingredients and techniques, and soon realized that he wanted to pursue a career in the culinary industry.

Career Beginnings

After finishing high school, Laprise enrolled in culinary school in Quebec City. He completed his training in just two years and immediately began working at a number of top restaurants in the area. His talent and passion for cooking quickly caught the attention of local food critics, and he soon became known as one of the most promising young chefs in the region.

In 1984, Laprise moved to Montreal to work at the prestigious Le Château Frontenac restaurant. There, he honed his skills under the guidance of legendary chef Jean-Paul Grappe. Laprise worked tirelessly to perfect his craft, experimenting with new techniques and ingredients every chance he got.

Rising to Fame

In 1993, Laprise opened his own restaurant, Toqué!, in Montreal. The restaurant was an instant success, with food critics and diners alike raving about Laprise’s innovative dishes and commitment to using local ingredients. Over the years, Toqué! has earned numerous accolades, including a coveted spot on the San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

Despite the success of Toqué!, Laprise never rested on his laurels. He continued to experiment with new techniques and ingredients, constantly pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the kitchen. He also became a champion of the local food movement, advocating for the use of sustainable, locally sourced ingredients in all of his dishes.
