Rise to Fame

In 1999, Kochhar was offered the opportunity to head up the kitchen at Benares, a new restaurant in London’s Mayfair district. The restaurant, which specializes in contemporary Indian cuisine, quickly gained a reputation as one of the best in the city. Kochhar’s innovative approach to traditional Indian dishes, such as his signature tandoori salmon, earned him critical acclaim and a loyal following among food lovers.

In 2001, Kochhar was awarded his first Michelin star for his work at Benares. This was a significant achievement, as it made him the first Indian chef to receive this prestigious accolade. He would go on to earn a second Michelin star in 2007, cementing his reputation as one of the world’s finest chefs.

In 2008, Kochhar opened his second restaurant, Rang Mahal, in Dubai. This restaurant, which features a modern take on traditional Indian cuisine, has also been highly successful and has helped to further elevate Kochhar’s profile in the culinary world.
